Cockroach Killer Gel vs Home Remedies: Which Is More Practical?
You switch on the kitchen light at midnight. Something small and brown runs behind the gas cylinder. Sound familiar? The presence of cockroaches is a common affair in Indian households. Warm climate, monsoon moisture, shared drainage systems in flats, and damp wash basins all attract cockroaches. This is why people use anything that comes handy to deal with them - baking soda, bay leaves, soapy water, and even the neighbour’s spray.
Here is the short answer. Home remedies can work, but most of them will solve your problem only with cockroaches that are visible to the eye. Roach killing gel will affect invisible cockroaches, because they take the bait back to the nest. The best results come from using both: clean-up and sealing from the home side, gel from the bait side.
Do home remedies help get rid of cockroaches?
Some do. Most do not, at least not on their own.
Soap water kills a cockroach if you spray it directly. Boric acid, used carefully, can kill them too. Cleaning and sealing food sources is the most useful “home remedy” of all, even though it doesn’t feel like one.
But smell-based hacks are weaker. Bay leaves, neem leaves, clove and camphor may keep a few roaches away from one spot for a short time. I have not seen solid evidence that they clear an infestation. If a hack comes with a promise of “gone in one night”, be doubtful.
The problem lies in the concealed population. There are so many more for each cockroach you see crawling around at night, hiding in cracks or behind the refrigerator. Killing one on the floor doesn’t touch them.
How cockroach killer gel works
The gel bait contains a tiny ball of food-like gel with a slowly acting insecticide contained within it. The cockroach ingests it, returns to its shelter, and dies there. Other roaches feed on the dead one or on its droppings, and may be affected too. Pest-control extension services call this the “domino” effect.
This is why gel is put in small spots rather than sprayed around everywhere. You are not trying to intimidate cockroaches.. You are inviting them to eat.
Two things make gel more practical than sprays in a family home. You don’t have to empty your kitchen, and there is no strong smell. The paste stays where you put it, inside cracks and corners.
One honest note: cockroaches can get picky. Studies have found that some populations of German cockroaches are able to recognize sugar bait. When gel does not work for several weeks, alternate their locations or seek professional advice regarding alternative products.
Home remedies worth trying (and the ones to skip)
Let me be fair to the kitchen cabinet.
Soapy water in a spray bottle. Good for a roach you spot in the open. It kills on contact only.
Sticky traps. They don’t solve the problem, but they show you where roaches travel. That tells you where to put gel.
Boric acid, with great care.It is widely used in baits. Store it away from reach of children, animals, and foods. Apply it lightly to those areas which cannot be touched by anyone. If there is an infant in your family, do not use this product.
Sealing gaps. Use putty or cement on cracks around pipes and tiles. This is boring and very effective.
Mostly skip
1. Baking soda and sugar. Popular online. I could not find reliable proof that it clears roaches.
2. Bay leaf, camphor, clove, neem. Smell may repel for a day or two. Do not rely on it for a full infestation.
3. Petrol, kerosene, or powerful chemicals. Hazardous, flammable, and not worth the risk in a house that has a gas cooker.
Tonight’s 7-day cockroach routine
This is the routine I would follow in my own kitchen.
Day 1
Clean the counters, stove, and sink with soap and water.
Take the dustbin out. Don’t leave it overnight.
Repair the leak in the tap. The roaches require water more than food.
Store the remaining atta, rice, sugar, and biscuits in covered boxes.
Wipe the sink dry using a towel before sleeping.
Day 2: map the hiding spots
Put two or three sticky traps along the walls near the stove, sink and fridge. Check them in the morning. Wherever roaches show up most is your target.
Day 3: place the gel
This is where DeadSure’s Cockroach Killer Gel fits in. It comes with a precision syringe, so you can put pea-sized dots (smaller than a grain of rice is enough) in these places:
hinges of cabinet doors
cracks behind the stove and fridge
under the sink, near the pipe
corners of the pantry shelf
Keep dots away from the places you touch or cook on. Do not smear it. Small dots work better than big blobs.
Day 4 to 7: stay boring
Don’t spray strong insecticide near the gel, as it can make roaches avoid the bait. Keep the kitchen dry at night. Re-check the spots on Day 7 and refill any dots that are gone.
Mistakes that bring cockroaches back {#mistakes-that-bring-cockroaches-back}
Most failures come from habits, not products.
Using spray and gel together. The spray can repel roaches from the bait.
Skipping the drain. Pour hot water down the sink and bathroom drains at night. Cover them with a mesh.
Ignoring cardboard. Delivery boxes and old newspapers are perfect hiding spots. Don’t store them under the sink.
Stopping too early. One good week doesn’t mean the nest is finished. Bait continuously for 3-4 weeks.
Forget about the wedding season clutter. Additional cutlery, piled up plates and post-festival scraps attract cockroaches rapidly. Clean everything before storing it away in the cupboard.
Important safety notice: Store away gel and boric acid out of reach of both kids and animals. If either ingest any amount of the bait, contact a physician or the poison control center immediately.
When to get professional help instead of doing it yourself
If you continue to see cockroaches during daytime after 3 weeks, the problem is not just confined to the kitchen; a large nest usually means daytime activity.
If the infestation affects the entire building, if roaches continue to come from a common shaft, or if you find egg casings in several spots, contact a pest control compan
For everybody else, the procedure is very straightforward. Do tonight’s clean-up, set your traps tomorrow, and place your first gel dots on Day 3. Tick off Day 7 on your phone calendar.
